Testing freshwater streams for invertebrates
What a productive two days of water testing. Our kaimahi welcomed Ashley from Boffa Miskel who demonstrated how to catch and preserve invertebrates found in our freshwater streams here in Mahia. This type of testing happens between December and April and samples are preserved in ethanol. The more invertebrates you find, the better the water quality is. We found signs of freshwater mussels, dragonfly lava, snails, shrimp and toe bitters. We are extremely grateful for the support of Te Hau Spark and Ngaromoana Raureti.
