Outlined in our Taiao aspirations for our whenua.
"Our Taiao is looked after and every experience shared gives back to our Taiao and Rongomaiwahine. Te Māhia-mai-Tawhiti whenua is restored to what it was 200 years ago. Our peninsula is pest free. Kaimoana is plentiful."
Our Manaaki Taiao are dedicating time to achieve this.
Throughout 2021, our team has replaced and repaired 20 plus kilometers of fencing to stock proof the waterways at various areas about the iwi.
Pakeke informed our Manaaki Taiao team of historical sites on Kaiwaitau. Knowing that our tipuna once worked on these sites of whenua pushed our team to complete tasks on time and to a high standard. Our roles here have varied, but the whenua was improved with the clearing of wilding pine, pest eradication, fencing and riparian planting.
Listening to the aspirations from our people, we went about beautifying and creating family friendly easy water access at Te Kohatu o Ripeka (The Rock).
We achieved this by removing and replacing the rail fence. Our team built an easy access “jetty” for everyone, seats for families to enjoy and placed two picnic tables for families.
An area was also cleared and made into a car park, and tī kōuka was planted.
